🇺🇸 When Your Child Deploys: A Military Mom’s Heart

There is a unique kind of love that comes with being a military parent—one filled with pride, strength, and a quiet fear that never fully goes away.

As parents, our instinct is to protect our children. But what happens when they grow up, serve our country, and we can no longer keep them safe?

💔 Pride and Fear, Side by Side

In 2019, my son, a U.S. Marine, told me he was being deployed to Iraq.

My heart dropped—and at the same time, it filled with pride.

Just months before, I had lost my dad, my only parent. The thought of losing my child, too, was overwhelming. And yet, like so many military parents, I showed up with strength.

I told him I was proud. I reminded him I had his back. And of course—“Don’t forget to call your mom 😊.”

🇺🇸 A Moment I’ll Always Hold Onto

One of the greatest gifts is that my dad was able to attend my son Zachary’s Marine Corps boot camp graduation.

He passed before Zack deployed, but he got to see that moment.

Despite their playful Army vs. Marine banter 😊—he was incredibly proud.

That memory means everything to me.

🌙 The Hardest Part: The Waiting

What people don’t always talk about is the waiting.

The silence. The nights of wondering if your child is safe.

Even knowing he was trained and capable didn’t stop the worry. When days passed without hearing from him, it was agonizing.

And then the phone would ring.

Just hearing his voice made everything feel okay again.

📦 Loving Them From Afar

When you can’t protect your child, you find other ways to show love.

For me, that meant care packages—socks, snacks, small comforts from home.

I gathered donations and made sure not just my son, but other Marines received something too.

Because military families take care of each other.

⏳ When Homecoming Isn’t What You Expected

When his deployment ended, I imagined running to hug him.

But COVID changed everything.

No homecoming. No immediate reunion.

Months later, around Mother’s Day 2020, I finally saw him—and got that hug.

I will never take that moment for granted.
